It's out there in the Hereford breed too. I recently received a flyer for an upcoming local association sale and was appalled to see the Lot 1 (donated) heifer had a Calving ease of -4.5 (MINUS 4.5!) and Lot 2 embryos all had negative Calving ease (CED) numbers including embryos sired by a bull with a -7.4, MINUS 7.4! The Hereford breed AVERAGE CED is +3.0. What good does it do for the breed to be selling these, even to the show crowd, animals for breeding when it's almost sure they are going to have calving problems? Only a few of the bulls in this upcoming sale had CEDs above the breed average. We buy bulls to breed, why choose a bull with below average rating in his primary job? The Hereford Association does a good job with EPDs, why not use them? |
