SC Wisconsin | The effectiveness of foliar depends on the metric being measured. Some of these comparisons are made when the desired outcome is a change in grain protein content, like spring wheat. If you look at the change comparing soil applied urea to late season foliar applications you can see some pretty wild swings in protein in some years. Comparing melted urea to UAN foliar applications with the same timing will likely provide similar results. Many ways to get the desired result. Foliar urea does have a niche to fill when premiums are on the table or in specialty crops, but you won't replace the amount of N required for corn through foliar applications. Roots do have a role beyond water transport and leaves primary purpose is to capture light and exchange gases with the atmosphere. There is a fine line between sufficiency and phytotoxicity with any foliar application. | |
