I think the bonus using urea is that it is 1. it ammonical and 2. is a carbon based nitrogen.

1. if you need nitrate, then its not going to give you the response you are looking for, but late season, when you are running out of ammonium, this gives corn what it needs.
2. corn can absorb urea, it does not have to be broken down. because it is in a carbon form, the plant has uses much less energy assimilating it into proteins.
