Conger, MN | My grandfather had mineral rights in NW North Dakota and Manitoba. When he died, they were not worth anything . . . and he had no other assets that had to be probated. As such, they were "let go" for 40 years or so. (Thankfully they did not just disappear.)
When the Bakken Range took off, we realized that there may be some value there. We basically went on a wild goose chase (or treasure hunt?) trying to put together the pieces. It took a long time, but it has been worth it. My father, aunts and cousins combined the small fractional shares, which made it easier to deal with.
I would suggest seeing if you can pool your mineral rights with others. If there are numerous people that can join together, it gives you more clout for dealing with the jockeys trying to buy mineral rights, and it justifies spending a bit of money to maximize the value for everyone. | |
