Subject: RE: ESN VS UREA VS UREA+AGRITAIN

Eastern Shore of MD
We did a test last year on our milo with esn vs urea vs 30% on both irrigated and non irrigated ground.

We typically apply 100% of our seasons milo fert preplant, lightly vertical till, and then plant. We have tried some forms of split applying N (on irrigated milo) with zero real success. This type of fert program is generally very frowned upon as we have OM in the 1-2% range and CEC around 1-2. Leaching is a big concern for us.

Our thought process on the test was to see if the ESN was worth the cost and then also to see if liquid 30% leached or volatized more than urea or esn. I didn’t take in season soil samples; the yield monitor was the judge. Total N was the same across the board.

We saw zero yield difference between the products. This was ‘replicated’ on two farms, one irrigated and one dryland. Two varieties. The one variety averaged just under 120, and wouldn’t ya know, it was a non irrigated farm. We were really surprised. I woulda bet that the esn out performed the others but it just wasn’t the case.

Maybe different results this year? But for the cost increase of the esn, we might not try it again.
