I'd get a rotary hoe and hoe it 3 or 4 times. If it's sandy like you say the hoe should work aggressively. It should be a consistent thinning.


I use a rotary hoe for weed control early. It does thin it, but not super uniformly for sure. It'll be most vulnerable when the first leaf is just open. It's hard to pull corn up with the hoe, but easy to bury when it is small.
