I believe that's a common misconception mostly due to the lack of independent breeders marketing their own proprietary germplasm. Independent lines are used everyday by major companies for breeding and sales. The entire germplasm pool sold today was built on independent breeding and university breeding before Big ag bought out as much as they could. I attached some data from 3rd party testing locations highlighting that competing is possible.
