If you're only off 3 inches, you are doing very well! The margin of error is 8 inches with SF1.

You can probably achieve much better results with SF3 by getting an SF6000 that's SF3 ready. You could get the SF3 90 day subscription for $650. SF3 is about 9 months repeatable, vs SF1 and SF2 which isn't. SF2 isn't all bad either, but if you leave for the night, you will see some drift by morning. As long as you're paying for the subscription, you might as well upgrade receivers and go SF3.

Demos, an SF6000 has a 24 hour demo available called "grace period", the SF7000 has a 72 hour demo available that your dealer will have to provide a code for.

Edit to add:
A TCM that's going out may show symptoms you describe. The SF3000 is old enough, that's not out of the question.
