I've gone to Network Attached Storage (NAS) for my backups. These devices basically allow you to create your own personal cloud without subscription fees. You can access your data from anywhere with an internet connection if desired. If you buy the right one, it has multiple hard drives to enable redundant backups in the event one fails. The backup software that comes with most also creates snapshots which are supposed to help fight against the possibly of your data being hacked and ransomed, but that feature isn't foolproof.

You'll still want some sort of off site backup in the event of fire, but with a NAS on site, you have quick download/upload, plus you aren't at the mercy of well-known cloud storage options being a massive target for hackers.

It's a Chinese company, but the synology beestation appears to be a good startup NAS. Other more advanced versions also require more technical setup.

With respect to the guys saying a portable hard drive is a good storage solution, they carry a pretty big amount of risk. First, most people don't backup computers to them as often as they should. 2nd, most people don't have a redundant drive that they backup the 1st one to, so they're stashing all their data on a device that is a single point of failure. It'll work until it doesn't. Once it doesn't, you've completely lost your backup data.

As an air-gapped, longer-term part of a wider backup solution, portable hard drives certainly could have their place. You'd basically make a copy of your main backup system to the portable drive once every 6 months or so, and then disconnect the drive and store it in a safe. This wouldn't necessarily provide a current backup in 3 months, but it would backup a majority of your files in a location hackers or viruses cannot access.

Which method you choose depends on how much you value your data and how much you want to spend protecting it.
