Of course Ukraine is the fight of our time. It is not a colonial adventure like Irak or Palestine. It is a fight in the developped world about values and justice. On this one The USA is right. It has not always been the case in foreign involvment and i would not put to much blame on your country for the last majors conflagrations.
La grande guerre!? I am not sure the USA could have done anything to prevent it. The central power, Germany, Austria empire and the Russian were so inepts strategically and politicaly they could'nt be helped. It evolved to become a kind of european civil war till WW2. At this moment the only real superpower could have bent the curb of history but in many way it was involved so deeply financially on all side the choice of action were not that clear.
The cold war? It is an interesting paradox. The nuclear dissuasion forced the nuclear power to stay up in conventionnal arms for years. The risk of war became so heavy, so dangerous it had to be avoided at any cost. The two powers fiction (because we now know there was only one superpower) gave the world a relative stability.
We are now in a more volatile world. The internationnal forum are weakening. There is less room for education of citizens and leadership. Diplomaty has never been so discredited, it has never been so important.
