So I'm looking into building a barn to start finishing my own cattle and was thinking about 80 head to start, they will holsteins purchased at 500 pounds. My dad feeds out around 400 holsteins a year give or take and buys them either freshly weaned or as bottle calves. He has 9 cattle groups and it is setup where we sell 8 a week and then we just move the largest 8 from each pen to the next one. My question is with only 80 would it make sense to do something similar and buy feeders and sell fats monthly or just have one big group and empty the barn at once? Sorry for the long winded post. (Also not going to put them in with my father's steers as he doesn't have room and this barn will be built on a farm I recently purchased and live on)

As much as I dislike contracting and the issues I believe it causes for all of us in the industry, the only way I would put up a new barn set up is with the ability to sell 40 finished at a time and have a way to load them out directly onto a semi trailer.

Also, following the seasonality of prices, I would try to have them finished to sell every April for the best chance at maximum profitability.
