Have an old local paper from that era.

People must have written small personal stories/happenings from the week and shared them to the paper. A bunch of “Mr and Mrs soandso” spent time at the “Johnsons” playing cards last Thursday was apparently news worthy.

Zuckerberg didn’t invent Facebook, he just figured out how to put it on the internet.

Radio stations also had the social gossip type of programming, who was in town, what events were on, and so forth. Same type of feel to it. Then throw in a recipe.

Yeah, the "News From Lake Woebegone" segment in A Prairie Home Companion was a spoof of a real thing, wasn't it? Mom and dad enjoyed it and got a good chuckle, especially when the news was something like "Mrs. Hochstatter saw a car drive through town with a California license plate." Grandma who was born in 1910 couldn't for the life of her figure out why that was funny. Seemed like real news to her.
