Biggest thing is maturity. Some states have a minimum babysitting age as well. I think here in MO it is 13. Our 2 boys are not quite 3 yrs apart. When our oldest turned 13, we started letting them stay home alone for short periods on a trial basis. Had a few very minor issues to iron out, but now that the youngest understands that the older is in charge when we are not there and respects that, everything goes smooth. They both are well versed on what action to take if an emergency arises. We also have a couple of neighbors who are generally home that can be there in less than 5 min if needed. They both have a list of chores to do during the day and a specific amount of time allotted for computer/video game time. They both are accountable to each other in that respect. JMHO, 11 is still too young regardless of maturity.
