Hi:

This is what we do. First strand, 6 to 8 inches from the ground. Second strand, 6 to 8 inches above that. Buzz the perimeter with a mower or weed eater if needed and get a fencer hot enough to burn back new growth. I have heard some that run another hot wire at the 3 or 4 foot level for deer, we haven't needed it yet. We make both wires hot. Some use 1 wire and get by fine. We have tried a lot of different things but a fence is the only consistent one. It's plenty of work but we'd have nothing left if we didn't do it. HTH
