I never had a jd head, always ran an 820 or 1020 but I'v had the green underwear guys comment several times at what a good job cutting they were doing. No one around here runs the 1.5 cut any more and I would not buy one myself. I think the 1020 will work for you, read the book, set the feeder face and float springs correctly and it will cut fine.
