From what I've been reading, most universities are backing away from the 1.2 # per bu. recommendation. In our area various watersheds are being opened up to the CSP program. I went to an informational meeting last winter on the CSP, one of their points was you'd be penalized if you applied more than 120# N per acre. That was for corn on corn. For corn on alfalfa sod they recommended 0 additional N, for corn on beans they subtracted 1# N for every bushel bean yield from the 120#. You must also keep records and adjust for any manure applied. Last year corn yields in this area probably averaged 200 bu, give or take, in a normal year probably 170-190. Most people I've talked to in this area plant 29-34k. I'm sure your ground is much different than what we have up here, (NE Ia), but I think you could cut back on N. With the price of N and the price of corn the highest yield doesn't always make the most money.
