I think they have had drainiage tile under some, but I dont' think that it really amounts to good aeration. 

Self supporting bulkheads would probably be better then driving posts.  Just basically a plywood verticle with a plywood horizontal half as big all tied together in a big L shape.  The grain goes on the right side of the L, not the left, so that the horizontal plywood is weighted by the pile.
