When I buy fertilizer, I either buy bulk or anhydrous. I get both delivered in containers alongside my field. Truck can then haul whatever else. But I don't own all the transportation machinery: it's either a transports company or my dealer. Both charge market rates. Given my acreage, transportation gear would be too heavy an investment.
For hauling crop, most people here around either use a tractor and grain cart, but tractors are made to pull machinery in the fields, not to haul goods on roads, their tires go down too fast and their roading is a PITA for other drivers (cars, trucks, etc) or use transportation companies with trucks and either containers or trailers depending on the volume and availability.
