Subject: Combining lodged soybeans

Boyd, WI
I've got a lot of beans that lodged on me this year. Combination I think of varieties, hot & dry, and then wet weather, lots of pods , and overly tall bushy plants. Some are tangled and mangled, but a lot of them were pushed over in storm winds and lay in a somewhat easterly position.

I'm worried that I'm going to have a hard time getting them picked up, many stems lay horizontal 2 to 6 inches off the ground and then had grown vertically less than a foot later when we had more rain. They're all drilled at 7 or 8 inch spacing. I know I'll lose some to harvest loss, what can I do to minimize that? We'll have a new 1020 CIH head on a 2388 combine. Also a new AWS air system for the head.

Can anyone tell me how to set this machine up right from the get-go rather than me using 50 acres to get educated? I've heard changing the axle heights on the front or back, etc. We usually never have a tall lodged problem in our northerly growing area. Thanks a lot.
