In down beans we normally have the best luck running at an angle so that the beans are leaning parrell with the cutterbar. In worst case senario we have cut one way but that is rare. About 4-5 years ago we had a lot of flat beans and ended up buying pickup gaurds for the platform (CIH 1020). These are long spring loaded fingers that mount over the regular guards and the tips run on the ground (spring allows them to float with the ground) and get under the down beans. They also have an arched back that is about 5" high that lifts the plants so that the reel can grab them. As I recall we put 14 or 15 on a 25' head. Some of you "old timers" may remember them from back in the day before platforms had automatic header height control. Drawback to them is once the ground starts getting daamp of an evening when the due starts to set in the tips begin dragging up leaves & you have to shut down for the day. Also have to wait a little longer in the morning before starting to cut to allow the ground trash to dry.
