You probably won’t break up any hardpan when you are only 7” deep. But are you sure you have been going 8” in previous years or does your machine “cheat” on depth a little? I spent a little time with a hand shovel behind my disc chisel and found it was nowhere near the depth I thought it was so I bought a DMI 527. Now that the hardpan is gone I can pull a regular chisel with straight shovels almost as deep as the 527 when we are pressed for time and have enough help to run another tractor.

How do you handle cornstalks? Do you remove or shred them?
