Yes I can farm without subsidies. If that small amount of money was keeping me in farming I would have quit along time ago.Compared to the gross dollars per acre direct payments and ccp are not that big of %. The landlords get it anyway by raising rents. If we did not have subsidies I would bet cash rents would not be as high. I know you don't like patents on plants but now that they are the norm, there are many companies including the one I work for that have lots of new technologies coming. Monsanto will not be the only one with traits ,there is competition and that will drive tech fees lower in my opinion.
Example is vistive soybeans, there is no tech fee for the technology.
Subsidies are not keeping africa from raising GMO's.They don't want the technology from what I gather. I guess they would rather let there people starve.
