NW Tennessee | We haven't grown any wheat in three or four years, but did every year up until then. We always let the co-op sow it mixed with fertilize with their air-flow truck. We usually disced the ground first, then worked it in with a do-all or sometimes disced it in lightly and roll the ground behind the disc. There is way more wheat in our area sowed than drilled. I believe if you increase seeding rates by 20-30% it yields as well as drilled. That said, there is an intensive management program around here called Wheat-tech. (sp?) I think they recommend drilling, for whatever reason. Could be yield, seed emergence, lower seeding rate, disease control, or combination of all. |
