| Nerly always population is a factor in stalkrot. Problem is other factors such as early summer rain causing large kernel numbers and heavy draw of sugars to the grain (and high yield potential) and late season photosynthetic stresses such as cloudy August weather reduces the sugar production. Net affect is an imbalance of distribution of available sugar to both meet grain filling and life in the roots. Consequently the roots are overcome by micro organisms, the plant wilts, pith pulls away from rind, stalk weakens and plant lodges. Too high of a plant population for that season's environment, shades plants, reduces sugar production and sets the whole process in motion. Hybrids differ in response to the favorable june environment in terms of setting more kernels and differ in reduction in photosynthesis when at high population. | |
