Subject: RE: Life Magazine Nov 29 1943 German Troops trying escape

Farmington IL
MANY years ago a neighbor had a cook out party and he invited a co worker of his. He got to talking about his life before America. He had been a conscript in the German army he said they basically drafted everyone that could carry a rifle. He said they were in the middle of the country stationed as part of the last defense of the home land. They we very aware the end was near one way or another. He said the only thing they were concerned with was getting away from the Russians. They knew their only way to survive was to make their way to the Allied lines and surrender. They linked up with US troops and he made his way to America. He said they should have surrendered to the Brits, they had better food in their POW camps.
