Central Il Morton

billonthefarm - 4/14/2024 18:02 MANY years ago a neighbor had a cook out party and he invited a co worker of his. He got to talking about his life before America. He had been a conscript in the German army he said they basically drafted everyone that could carry a rifle. He said they were in the middle of the country stationed as part of the last defense of the home land. They we very aware the end was near one way or another. He said the only thing they were concerned with was getting away from the Russians. They knew their only way to survive was to make their way to the Allied lines and surrender. They linked up with US troops and he made his way to America. He said they should have surrendered to the Brits, they had better food in their POW camps.

Bill:

Have you heard the stories of POWs being brought to America to work on farms and in food production. Locally here they worked in Morton, Washington and Eureka Il canning companies as well as help on farms. Neighbor had one who worked for them and he returned to Germany after the war. Later he returned too Il to become a citizen and raise a family.
