Your claim of equal treatment of all cattle by previous owner is based upon what, faith?

Under these circumstances, I would have alternated treated and untreated calves and kept tag numbers of status. Any simple action of different conditions between the two groups is not controlled by your experimental design.

For example but not saying it skewed your results, what if one truck's exhaust entered the trailer more than the other? What if there is a PI-BVD calf in your treated group?

I admit the record keeping I'm suggesting adds work but it's entirely doable.
