NE ND | How many head in each pasture? Even if it’s only a dozen then I’d say run a bull in each and move your calving earlier not later. That’s what we do. We have cows in a mostly row crop area as well. We calve in late February thru mid April. It’s cold, but all the cows are at home and cows are tough as long as they have a place to get out of the wind. Newborns go inside the barn for a night or two and then are left outside with calving huts. We have more trouble with mud than the cold even when it gets to 20 below zero. Then when it’s time to AI we do that right before they get turned out to pasture in mid to late May. And every pasture gets its own bull. The busiest time, weather depending, is when we’re planting crops and AI’ing at the same time. Otherwise getting the calving done before planting is the key. Lots of others will say calve later and they may be right but this is what works for us. | |
