Western Ontario | Group 1; about a 100 mainly in Jan/Feb. 90% are AI or implanted embryos angus/herf. Let’s us produce a bull that is 16-18 months old for the next July 1 which is when the majority of commercial bull’s get turned out in our area. It’s a ton of work calving in the winter, more calving problems , crazy amount of bedding (never seems to really freeze up anymore) more health problems in calves.
Group 2; about a 100, start May 10th to July 1. All calve on grass, we check once or twice a day, we put in about a 1200 acres of crop so not any spare time to babysit. We back ground all those calve till the next April/may which is usually about the strongest market of the year (grass fever) strict 45 day bull exposure, if you’re open you leave, one of the best things we’ve done is heifers entering the May/June group only get exposed for 25 days.
Somebody on here once had the best line ever- “Cows are great at wearing out people and loader tractors” …..wish I would’ve came up with that because it’s the truest thing I’ve ever heard
