| We have found there are very few conditions where a no-till coulter helps, but there are a lot where they hurt.
If they ever intermittently throw out soil (which wavy ones do most of the time, especially in moist soils), the thrown out soil raises the gauge wheels and shallows up the seeding depth. At speeds greater than around 5mph, no-till coulters often throw soil beyond the reach of the closing wheels, then you are left with a depression - which water can stand in, following a big rain.
