NE Iowa | Becks actually was the first company that decided to make a unit a certain number of seeds. They chose 130,000 seed units because they figured they could always fit a standard amount of units in a pro box. Becks also tries to not let seed size figure into what they grow. The big companies want their beans to be a certain size and try not to get huge seed if they can help it. Same goes for corn. Some seed gets pretty big and people don’t like heavy bags. Becks also tries to just get the best producing seed regardless of how big it will get.
I was also told that the big companies want seed that is easy to grow as far as crow pollination and timing of the planting of male and female corns. Becks will pick the hybrids they think are best and do their best to make the rest happen.
I was impressed by the gentleman I talked with. I’d also say Becks is doing something right. They are still family owned and run and doing a good job of it. | |
