south central IOWA | The genetics involved for feed efficiency are the same whether it's high quality feed or low quality, aren't they?
I would agree there are other genetics involved that make cattle more suited for different regions but you can't get high performance out of low quality feed.
I feel the entire fed cattle industry is all about how efficient can they be but yet not enough is put into how efficient can the cattle be. The perception is, oh its an Angus so its going to be more efficient than a Simmental. But then you see a test like this with the 2 breeds in it and it shows that's not the case.
If you chased after only feed efficiency, you'd probably develop cattle that were goofy in some other aspect. So sense there is no such thing as the perfect animal, too get closer to that perfection, you really need to use those feed efficient genetics and then weed out the genetics that don't work for you, right? Probably why generations of cattle have been produced but people are still trying to make them better.
