EC Illinois | Picked up about 4 acres to plant into alfalfa. Last year it was in soybeans. We prefer to no-till but will work it if crucial. I imagine if no-till it should first be burned down. I have a grain drill with a small seed box, but I don’t have a manual to guesstimate settings. I suppose I would have to calibrate it. The grass seed box just dribbles it out on top of the ground and not into the row. For any reason, should it be going into the row? I know that stuff is supposed to be planted super shallow and I would imagine the row would bury it too much even on a light setting. I was thinking oats as the nurse crop. Should the oats be seeded at full rate, or thin? I have access to a neighbors culti-packer I can run if I dribble the seed on top of the ground, broadcast style. I also have access to a spinner spreader but I imagine the grass seed box would be more precise. How do you do it? | |
