Use to be 2 of 6 ADLs (Adult Daily Living activities) was the switch that turned on most policies. ADL, dressing, bathing, transferring from bed to toilet, etc. feeding themselves, etc.

Or mental incapacitation (dementia).

Either of these were the triggering mechanism, which would start the clock for the 'waiting' period (waiting period could 30, 60, 90 etc. days).

Unless he has a fairly old policy, he will be in a 'reimbursement' type policy. 20-25 years ago, you could buy an indemnity type policy (which paid, stated amount, whether your spent that much or not per day). Government ended these types of policies being sold after some date years ago (I took mine indemnity type policy out in the late 90's).
