Subject: RE: Calves Not Breathing at Birth

Alberta
****ty luck, same as here this year. Last year, no C secs, didn't touch anything 2nd calf an older unless it was backwards or had a malpresentation. 2 C secs this year, 5 backwards calves on heifers, that is almost 10 percent, 2 calf beds thrown out, Lost 1 calf bed to bloat before we could get the bed back in. A couple second calves lost calves, one was an easy pull that we worked on for an hour to get to breath on its own. Same bulls as last year. Just a Murphy's Law year. Here is a good flow chart put out by a couple vet students in Calgary. It may help with your problems. There are a couple things in here that I could have used. Epinephrine for heartbeat being one. And Doxapram for breathing being the other. One other thing is that I never go out to assist without my artificial respirator by my side. I have save many calve using the hand pump respirator, and it can pump a lot longer than I can blow.
