Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I was/am in a similar situation as the OP. Right or wrong, I purchased an older STX-450 Quad Trac on a retirement sale. Since it is right at 20 years old now, it does not have any cab suspension which makes for a rough rid on gravel roads. Mine is old enough that it has the Cummins 15 liter engine, no DEF in those days.
I had some idler leakage but due to advice here went with an after market changeover. This worked well and I will switch each over as necessary. The change over kit makes a lot of sense as it allows for individual adjustment and uses proven trailer seals.
The old girl takes considerable fuel but does get a lot done. In tough going, I can push about 24 gallons/hour through her. If it blew up and I needed something different, I don't know what I'd do. Tracks certainly have their place but I'm not certain they are the answer everywhere.
Good luck with your decision. |
