| 1 1/3 cups sugar
1 tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp salt
3 cups milk
2 egg yolks
5 oz evaporated milk
1 cup whipping cream
1 tbsp vanilla extract
Combine sugar, cornstarch, salt, and stir in milk over med heat. Cool to simmer for a few minutes. Set aside. Beat egg yolks and combine with milk mixture. Heat on low and stir for 2 minutes until thickened. Add evaporated milk, whipping cream, and vanilla. Cool to room temp. It's now ready for the ice cream maker. I think Grandma used to put the mixture in the refrigerator for a while before freezing, but I'm not really sure why.
Enjoy.
This is the closest recipe that I have found that was just like grandma's.
