Never cared for asparagus as a kid as it was steamed then served with warm milk over it. Now the wife serves it with what she calls a white sauce, kind of creamery with a few slices of cheese melted in. But on occasion when I do cook it, still steamed, but I cheat and just melt plenty of velveta over it, kind of works as a gravy and goes with ham, hamburgers, even steak.
