Subject: RE: 36" to 30" row widths

I farm in east central Illinois. I believe you would be disappointed if you are seeking a yield increase at your latitude. I do know your seed, insecticide and machinery costs will increase though.

I'm afraid I can remember when farmers grew tired of owning a 30" planter for beans and a 36 to 40" planter for corn, so they thought they would try planting some corn with their 30" row planter. By golly, that fall they thought the 30" row corn did almost as well as their wide rows... a couple years later they thought it might have been a little better than their wide rows... and then they were glad they switched everything over to 30" rows because they were sure it did better... and now they are just sure you can't raise good corn in 36" wide rows.

I plant narrow row beans (18") and 36" row corn. I believe I've had as large a percentage of 200+ corn yields as my neighbors on far less seed, insecticide and machine expense.

OK, I'm gonna duck now so you guys can make fun of me.
