Subject: RE: Different soils?

If you stay in front of it, yes, it will work, but if you start out behind, or get behind....and it can look like "just a little behind" based on pH....some of our soils CEC is such that there is no way in h-e-wherever that you are going to buffer it back with a surface applied treatment.  We have fields which can have a pH which is "acceptable" by many recommendations yet which still needs multiple tons of lime to get to where it really should be.   I've seen prescriptions where you pretty much just drive to the other end and then unload the truck.  There's no way to make this sort of correction without mixing the lime in.  Sorry, guys, but it just isn't going to work when you need large application rates, and with low pH you are going to pay now or pay later, so you are better off to just get the job done on the front end rather then toying around at it for years and years and still not have it finished when you are retired.
