The soil ecologists tell us that pH 5.5 is fine for microbial activity. Of course, it is very dependent on which microbes we are talking about, and I'm not so sure the science is that advanced on this topic yet.

Flocculation and infiltration are most affected by tillage and mulch cover -- these are much more important than pH or Ca levels.
