washington CO | POFARMER,
i know exactly what you are going through. granted you are to the east of us and you probobly get more rain than what we do, but in our program we have found out that we can plant lower populations (17-22,000) for dryer years and still come out ok in wet years if we plant hybrids with high flex ears. last year was a very dry year and our corn simply baked out in the field, this years crop is a complete 180, we will have anywheres from 120-175 bushel corn depending on wether it is a bottom or hilled ground. our fertilizer program is similar to yours, 120-25-0 of N,P,K respectivly. year in and year out we fertilize for 100-120 bushel corn, this year we sidedressed because we had a pretty wet spring and we were hoping that it would still continue to rain throughout the growing season. it just makes more sense in our area to not throw alot of money out fertility wise because in the dry years we cannot make corn work as well as other crops, even tho there will still be carry over going into the next crop rotation. | |
