| The problem with comparing two places in the world is growing conditions. In high OM soils there is more of a buffer against drought just because the topsoil and subsoil will hold a lot of moisture within the OM. When you get to low OM soils mainly clay and silty soils if it gets dry, ITS DRY and the moisture is held in the clays to the point that the plants cannot get a hold of it. Sands just don't hold moisture at all. Where i live we have a combination of Silts and Clays, and shooting to get a field to average 200 Bu is not economically feasible because of the same problems that you have in Mo. Too hot, too dry, too wet, 100 degrees during pollination as was the case this year. Im sure that you have the same problems, if you wanted to try to get 200 bu every year you would go broke in a hurry! just my 2ยข
