Subject: Re: Milo guards

NC KS
We were discussing this the other day at the store. I am not sure about the design of a 920 JD head but a Gleaner header these days is considerably different than 15 years ago. The old heads had the cutterbar about 6" in front of the auger. The new Gleaner heads of the last 10 years has the cutterbar about 12-15" ahead of the auger. That distance eliminates the need for milo guards to some extent. Yes, you will have a few heads drop down when cut but you won't have heads plugging up in a milo guard either or bent wires to straighten. If your milo is even and reasonably thick, I say run without. If it is thin or uneven or you have a header like the old Gleaners-definitely run milo guards.
