You, sir, were talking with a man with more axial flow experience than possibly all on this board. Cover plates will do well for you. We changed wires for years before realizing we were wasting our time and efforts. 3 cover plates will be plenty, keep the concaves close to rotor but far away enough to keep straw long as possible.
