The sad part is that many of those mills remain today largely as they were over 100 years ago when they were built.
Sydney Steel was shut down here a number of years ago (2000) after a massive modernization in the late 80's that saw the taxpayers dump over 300 million into the instalation of a new electric arc furnace and rail mill. It's gone to India now... for about 3 cents on the dollar.
Had there been any serious commitment there over the years from any of it's various owners it probably could have been saved, and probably modernized long before it was.
Most steel is being cast in east Asia today, largely due to the environmental and labor regs I would suspect, or the lack thereof...
