Had a massive flood here in 1977, and that was the beginning of the end. The 80's were focused on rebuilding and modernizing.
They did develop a giant electric arc furnace, and the flood wiped it out completely a year after it was in service. They spent another 4 million to rehabilitate it, ran it for 4 years, and shut it down forever. Isnt that a fine way to waste money. Shut down the Johnstown mills in the early 1990's.
Finnaly their union delivered the last blow. Just an example of how the employees demanded more and more and more, and then it fell through.
They lost their retirements, and everything they had. It was eventually made up to them, but not how it was supposed to.
Bethlehem now owned by International Steel Group.
