Badger....if the business went by initials...like J & something, I've had a similar experience. Best maybe to stay clear....at least the philosophy here some 50 miles away.

As for the differences in the grades of hay, there is pretty much a standard for both alfalfa and grasses based on appearance, stage of harvest and test results. Thus...if no test, it is simply grinding hay:

SUPREME (>180 RFV, >23% crude protein): pre-bloom, soft and fine-stemmed, extra leafy, hay color excellent.

PREMIUM (155-180 RFV, CP 21-23%): from pre-bloom to more mature, Extra leafy, not much damage and color good.

GOOD (130-155 RFV, CP 18-21): from early to mid-bloom, can have slight discoloration (striped)

And so on.....
