It's not quite a field cultivator but for several years we ran a JD 550 Mulch Master and very rarely ran it over 2" deep. The 550's were made to be run shallow, with 24" low crown sweeps if you could see the end of a sweep above ground once in a while it was set just about right. I don't know how well a field cultivator would work running that shallow but the 550 worked great with it's 24" sweeps on 20" centers.
