Subject: RE: Sunflower planting/harvesting questions

Western Nebraska
We have only used 30" rows, but we usually plant confections. If you are planting oils I am not aware that the difference in spacing will make any difference in yield. As far as header, I am open to be corrected on this, I don't really think that there is any way that you would be able to put pans on a flex head. They really add quite a bit of weight and I think that you will need a rigid head to attach them to. If I get around to it I will take a picture of our pans tomorrow and post it so you can see why I say they need a rigid head. In order to keep the fire risk at a minimum be sure to keep the engine and exhaust system free of dust. You also must keep a close eye on bearings that could be heating. As long as you keep the machine clean and you have some wind while you are harvesting fire shouldn't be too much of a risk. From what I have seen and been told flowers might be a little bit more risky than soybeans to harvest.
